My time at SPU has profoundly transformed me. Like many of my fellow undergraduates, I embarked on my college journey under extraordinarily unusual circumstances. We started amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, navigating fully virtual classes, which challenged us to adapt and forge connections through screens. Entering our sophomore year felt like a second freshman year—learning to build relationships, attending classes in person, and living independently for the first time, all while dealing with ongoing COVID-19 challenges.
That year revealed unexpected mental struggles for me, and for a while, it was incredibly tough. I found myself overwhelmed, struggling to adapt to the new normal while managing academic responsibilities and personal well-being. At my lowest point, I turned to God for help, and that’s when He started working in my life.
I vividly remember the turning point. I was in a University Foundations class and struck up a conversation with someone who seemed nice. As the semester progressed, I learned that they were going through a rough time, and I decided to help them as best as I could. They were deeply moved by my support, and after we exchanged contact information, they invited me to join them for lunch at Gwinn, where they introduced me to their friends. Little did I know, that moment would introduce me to the best group of friends a person could ever ask for!
During this time, I finally decided to see a psychiatrist and take my mental health seriously. After receiving my diagnosis, I reached out to Disability Support Services (DSS), which provided me with the academic accommodations I needed. This support was transformative, allowing me to thrive academically and regain my confidence.
Later in the year, I started therapy with a faith-based therapist who helped me grow both personally and spiritually. This was a pivotal period in my life, as I began to understand myself better and develop coping strategies that aligned with my faith. The support from my therapist was invaluable, helping me navigate the complexities of my mental health while deepening my spiritual journey.
I also joined a Bible study with my friends, leading to profound experiences with the Holy Spirit that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. These moments of shared faith and reflection brought us closer together and reinforced the importance of community in my spiritual growth.
If it wasn’t for God stepping in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Honestly, I don’t know where my life will lead after college, but I know God has huge plans for me. On my graduation sash, I have written the verse 2 Samuel 22:2-3 which states:
“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior.”
This verse encapsulates my journey at SPU and my faith in God’s plan for my future. Although I may not know where God will lead me next, I am confident that as long as I keep Him as my foundation, I will be fulfilled. He has shared His testimony with me, and I have heard Him speak, and I cannot wait to get started on this journey.
My time at SPU has been a period of significant personal and spiritual growth. Despite the challenges, the support I received from my friends, family, and faith community has been instrumental in shaping who I am today. As I prepare to graduate, I carry with me the lessons learned and the deepened faith that will guide me in whatever path lies ahead.
